More affordable ATI Radeon HD 5700 hit the streets
If you are one of the those people who don’t like the idea of shelling out over$250 dollars for a graphics card, but still want the latest technologies under your hood, then the ATI Radeon HD 5700 series is meant for you. The two new GPUs are aimed at the mainstream market, as opposed to the enthusiast centric Radeon HD 5800 series, launched a couple of weeks ago.The two new cards – Radeon HD 5770 and the Radeon HD 5750 are based on the Juniper design core. In fact the the Radeon HD 5770 is pretty much the same as the last generation flagship Radeon HD 4870 in terms of hardware. The only difference comes in the memory bus bandwidth, with the 5770 having only 128-bits compared to the 256-bits on the 4870. But don’t think that would make a big impact on performance though, as it comes packed with GDDR5 memory. Other specs include an 850MHz core clock, 1200MHz memory clock and 1GB of memory. But the most surprising fact of all is the power consumption, which is only 86W at full load and a mere 18W at idle (compare this to Radeon HD 4870’s 90W at idle).
The 5750 is slightly underpowered by disabling certain pieces of hardware on the 5770 and undercooking the core clock to 700Mhz and memory clock to 1150MHz. It also comes with 1GB of memory but expect a 512MB variant too. It also features a much more simple cooler compared to the higher end 5000 series GPUs.
The street price for Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 is $169 and $129 respectively. Even though the performance is a bit lower than the Radeon HD 4780 and GeForce GTX 260, DirectX 11 support along with ATI Eyefinity and HD Audio processing are compelling enough features to opt for the newer chips.
