Gordon Brown congratulates British oscar winners
Gordon Brown has paid tribute to British success at this year's Oscars.
Sandy Powell won Best Costume Design for The Young Victoria while Ray Beckett picked up a Sound Mixing gong for The Hurt Locker.
The Prime Minister said: ''It's inspiring to see us continue to attain this gold standard in this industry during a year of such huge international competition.
''I know that wins like these, and the numerous nominations that the British received, all help towards inspiring the youth of Great Britain to aim for successful careers in film.
''I'd also like to congratulate our exceptional line-up of nominated actors, directors and film practitioners.
''Great Britain is one of the most creative countries in the world and still continues to blend the commercial with the cultural in new and uplifting ways.''
London-based Mr Beckett shared the best sound-mixing Oscar with his international colleague Paul Ottosson and their teams.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Beckett mentioned fellow Briton and boom operator Simon Bysshe.
The Association of Motion Picture Sound said in a statement that the men ''worked hard under arduous conditions'' in Amman and in the desert in Jordan ''to produce a soundtrack of outstanding quality''.
