• Asda's 100 day guarantee or your money back on George clothing

Supermarket chain Asda today launches an unprecedented 100 day guarantee or your money back on all George clothing.

The store could be hung out to dry if the scheme backfires and millions of shoppers cash in on the supersize returns policy which is almost four times longer than the high streets standard 28 days.

Whether its a hem thats unravelled on a dress, a lost shirt button or trousers that have ripped within the 100 days, Asda says as long as shoppers have a receipt, they will get a full no quibble refund.

George has ploughed s40 million into improving the quality of the whole range and brand director Fiona Lambert is confident it wont be taken to the cleaners.

A recent trial offering 100 day guarantee on school uniforms was a hit with sales totalling s9 million but only s900 worth of gear being brought back, Asda revealed.

The chain said as the credit crunch has started to ease, busy families are shunning bargain basement, throwaway fashion and looking for longer lasting quality clothing.A study found seven out of ten shoppers were unlikely to buy cheap trends while four out of ten said they would rather pay more for an outfit that was well made.

And almost half admitted they were ditching the make do and mend culture which became a recession mantra.

Miss Lambert said:Even though officially its the end of the recession, the attitudes we have developed towards being less wasteful are here to stay and although we all want to make do and mend the reality is that the busy Asda mum just doesnt have time.

The George 100 day quality guarantee now means that our customers should be just as happy with a George garment after washing and wearing as the day they bought it.

But the offer does not cover jewellery, footwear and accessories.

Asda has overtaken Marks and Spencer as Britains number one clothing chain with a 10.1% share of the market.

Figures from market analyst Kantar Worldpanel show Primark second with 9.9% and M&S third with 9.8%.
