National Board of Review honours Clooney, snubs Precious as Oscar race begins
Up in the Air, opening Friday in Toronto, has been named Film of the Year by the National Board of Review, an announcement that unofficially marks the start of movie awards season – and also debate over perceived snubs.
The job-loss comedy by Canadian Jason Reitman, Oscar-nominated for his previous film Juno, took four prizes: Best Film, Best Actor (George Clooney, shared with Invictus's Morgan Freeman), Best Supporting Actress (Anna Kendrick) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Reitman with Sheldon Turner).
In other key awards, Clint Eastwood won Best Director for Invictus, Carey Mulligan took Best Actress for An Education and Woody Harrelson won Best Supporting Actor for The Messenger.
Besides naming Up in the Air as its Best Film for 2009, the board of review also named 10 runners-up, presented alphabetically: An Education, (500) Days Of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, The Messenger, A Serious Man, Star Trek, Up and Where The Wild Things Are.
Board members are film buffs, scholars and teachers based in New York, whose picks often narrow the field for the explosion of critics' and guilds' announcements that will soon follow, leading to the Academy Awards ceremony on March 7.
