Google Launches News Site with Washington Post, NY Times
Google has joined hands with the Washington Post and the New York Times to create a new Internet tool that groups developing stories on one page. The Internet giant launched a trial run of the so-called "living story page" service on Tuesday.
The tool is "the first step toward changing the way news is consumed online," the Washington Post said, and it brings the Internet news market closer toward "one-stop shopping." Google says it will include more media outlets if the site proves successful.
The three companies began talks on the project in the spring. By partnering with America's top two newspapers, Google has launched a counter-offensive against media mogul and News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch, who publicly criticized Google's news search engine as "theft" because it offers content that it does not own.
Murdoch's Wall Street Journal is a fierce rival of the Post and the Times, while Google's arch nemesis is Microsoft, which operates the Bing search site. Microsoft reportedly has been talking with News Corporation about a deal to pay the news company to provide its content on Bing.
