Around 80 per cent of female gamers prefer the Wii to other consoles, say Nintendo
The Nintendo Wii console is the most popular platform among female gamers in the United States, according to the latest figures from Nintendo. Around 80 per cent of female gamers prefer the Wii, a huge lead over rivals Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, which were the consoles of choice for 11 per cent and nine per cent of female gamers respectively. The figures did not take in to account PC gamers, or those who play hand-held consoles, such as Sony's PSP or Nintendo's DS.
"This didn't happen by accident," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo in the US. "It's the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market."
There are an estimated 11.7 million female console gamers in the United States, and around nine million have chosen the Wii as their primary home games console. Female gamers are still outweighed by male gamers, with about 33.3 million men in the US saying they regularly play video games on a home console.
Nintendo has been aggressively pursuing the so-called "casual" gaming market for the last few years. Its hand-held DS console, and games such as Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, have been credited with attracting more women and young girls to video games, while the Wii, which uses a motion-sensing controller system, has proved particularly popular with families.
