We fell in love in a war zone, wed.. and now I'm going back
They met in a warzone and married following a whirlwind romance. But just three months after their wedding, Stefanie and Adam Bliss face the pain of parting.
For Stefanie is preparing for an agonising return to Afghanistan, leaving her new husband behind in Britain.
And while their snatched first dates in the battle-ravaged country came when they were free and single, now they must worry for each other.
The couple met after RAF policewoman Stefanie, 24, was sent out to work at the airport in capital Kabul.
She said: “My mum was worried but I just felt proud and excited. It’s what you sign up for.”
On her very first shift Stefanie got chatting to Adam, 21 – a Household Cavalry interpreter – and the pair hit it off.
But she only realised she’d fallen for him when her tour ended four months later. So she volunteered to be sent back.
Adam had been sent to Camp Bastion – two hours away. But they bumped into each other in nearby Kandahar. And love blossomed… over chicken burgers in the canteen.
“It was hardly romantic and I didn’t even have any make-up,” says Stefanie. “But you improvise. I had to follow my heart.”
Two days later, they became a couple. Adam says: “Dating was basically just grabbing a coffee between flights and maybe at the end of the day. Neither of us could be away from our duties for long and there’s certainly no privacy on base.”
Stefanie flew home in August 2008 and Adam followed three weeks later.
“I went to his house to see him and never went home,” says Stefanie, from Newcastle. “We haven’t been apart since.”
A month later, Adam proposed and she accepted. “It was a huge shock – he hadn’t even met my family.”
They have now moved into Army accommodation in Putney, South-West London, but are already facing a split.
Adam adds: “It will be very different this time – the people with families are naturally more cautious. I never expected to go to war and come back with a wife but they say the best things happen when you’re not expecting it.”
